If you are selling a business it is wise to provide an overlap of support to your purchaser to allow them to understand the many foibles of the business and if you undertake deliveries to get a reasonable understanding of the geography of your customers locations. It enables the new owners to get aquatinted with their future staff and it helps the seller to make sure that their business that they have grown over the years is in capable hands.
For those that are buying a business, do not believe you are capable of running even a simple business if you have not spent time learning even the most simplest of tasks, such as how to keep track of papers and magazines passing through your business. Simple tasks such as News and Magazine Management requires a lot of understanding of the paper work that comes and goes to your Wholesaler. Every supplier has to be understood and treated in the way to achieve the best results and that means you are going to make many mistakes before you learn how to do it right. Be very wary if you are told by the vendor of the business it is any easy job running this business, because any business is a lot bigger than you think and does require much more effort than you imagine. Consider the use of Business Trade Associations for advice and training and do not spend that wealth that you have built up over many years until you have exhausted all free independent advice. Go and talk to another business owner of a similar type to the one you are considering who has no axe to grind and will be pleased to think that you think he has something important to say. Be very sure that you have all the necessary skills to take on a business as without them you will struggle and may kill the business and blight your future.
